Zermatt

Car-free, glacier-high and framed by the Matterhorn - the most beautiful big resort in the Alps.

Zermatt is pure Alpine theatre - a car-free village of horse-drawn sleighs and electric taxis beneath the Matterhorn, with some of the highest, most snow-sure skiing in Europe. You can ski across the glacier into Italy for lunch, the mountain restaurants are the best you'll find anywhere, and it's just as good for non-skiers thanks to the railways and viewpoints. Upmarket but relaxed - perfect for couples, foodies and mixed groups who want scenery and long, sunny cruising.

The skiing

Zermatt's skiing spreads across three linked sectors - Sunnegga-Rothorn, Gornergrat and the glacier at Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, which tops out at 3,883m (the highest lift in Europe) and links over the border to Cervinia in Italy. It's mostly long, cruisy reds with astonishing snow reliability and a season that runs almost year-round. Beginners have gentle areas at Sunnegga and Riffelberg; experts have the off-piste and the height to always find snow.

The Louk tip

Book a long lunch at Chez Vrony in Findeln and ski down to it, and ride Gornergrat early for the Matterhorn almost to yourself. If you ski to Cervinia, keep an eye on the last lift home - it's a long way round by taxi.

🚁Getting there

Zermatt is car-free. You either park at Täsch and take the shuttle train up (about 5 minutes), or - the lovely option - take the train the whole way from Geneva or Zurich, changing at Visp. It's around 3.5 hours by rail but scenic and stress-free.
