Val Thorens sits at 2,300m - the highest resort in Europe - which means it's snow-sure from the first lift to the last week of the season. It's a compact, purpose-built resort where you can ski to your door, it plugs straight into the vast Three Valleys, and after 3pm it turns into one of the best parties in the Alps. Brilliant for a group who want to ski hard and play harder, and reliable when lower resorts are struggling for snow.

⛷The skiing

From Val Thorens you can ski the entire Three Valleys - around 600km of linked pistes - but the resort's own bowl is superb in its own right, with a glacier and the highest lifts in the area. Because of the altitude the snow stays good late into spring. Wide, treeless slopes make it a cruiser's dream; the Cime Caron cable car serves a proper 900m descent, and there's easy access over to Méribel and beyond.

The Louk tip

Ride the Cime Caron cable car first thing on a clear morning for a 360° view over three valleys, then ski the long run back before the crowds. And pace yourself - La Folie Douce starts early.

🚁Getting there

The nearest airport is Geneva (around 3.5 hours), with Chambéry, Lyon and Grenoble also in reach. Most fly to Geneva and take a transfer up the Belleville valley; the road is well maintained but it's a long, high climb, so a comfortable transfer is worth it.
