Soldeu is the pick of the Andorran resorts - the gateway to Grandvalira, the largest ski area in the Pyrenees. It's built its reputation on brilliant, English-speaking ski schools and genuinely excellent beginner and intermediate terrain, which makes it a top choice for first-timers, families and mixed-ability groups. Add duty-free Andorran prices, sunny slopes, good snowmaking and a lively-but-friendly scene, and it's superb value for a first ski trip or a sociable week.

⛷The skiing
Soldeu sits mid-way along Grandvalira, ~210km of sunny, well-groomed Pyrenean pistes shared with El Tarter, Pas de la Casa and more. The skiing is superb for beginners and improvers - wide, gentle runs served by a gondola straight from the village, and ski schools that are famously good and English-speaking. Strong skiers can range across to livelier Pas de la Casa, and there's decent off-piste and a couple of parks. Snowmaking is excellent.

The Louk tipAndorra's ski schools are famously good and English-speaking - book lessons here even as an improver, they're excellent value. And it's duty-free, so the shops down the valley in Andorra la Vella are worth a rest-day trip.

Soldeu is reached from Spain or France: Barcelona and Toulouse airports are both around 3 hours by road (there's no airport or train in Andorra). Most people take a pre-booked transfer or coach up into the mountains.
