Morzine is a proper working Savoyard town - all timber chalets, a river running through it and a warm, unpretentious feel. It's the gateway to the enormous Portes du Soleil, which links twelve resorts across France and Switzerland, and it's tree-lined and lower down, so it's lovely in bad weather and brilliant for families and mixed-ability groups. Best of all, it's barely over an hour from Geneva, which makes it a dream for short breaks as well as full weeks.

⛷The skiing

Morzine sits at the heart of the Portes du Soleil - around 600km of pistes across a huge cross-border circuit taking in Avoriaz, Les Gets, Châtel and the Swiss resorts around Champéry. From Morzine you can lap the local Pléney and Nyon slopes, ride over to family-friendly Les Gets, or head up to snow-sure, freestyle-focused Avoriaz. It's mostly gentle-to-intermediate and tree-lined - forgiving in poor visibility - with the famous Swiss Wall at Chavanette for experts.

The Louk tip

Base in Morzine but buy the full Portes du Soleil pass and make a day of skiing over to Switzerland (Champéry) for lunch - no passport needed, just your lift pass. And if it's snowing, stick to the trees around Les Gets.
