Les Gets is one of the prettiest villages in the French Alps - traditional chalets, a proper village heart, and none of the concrete. It shares the vast Portes du Soleil with neighbouring Morzine, so 600km of cross-border skiing is on your doorstep, but its own gentle, tree-lined slopes and superb ski schools make it a wonderful, laid-back choice for families and beginners. Close to Geneva, too, so it's easy for a relaxed week or a long weekend.

⛷The skiing

Les Gets sits between two ski areas: the Chavannes side links straight into Morzine and the whole Portes du Soleil (600km across France and Switzerland), while Mont Chéry across the village is a quieter, sunnier hill that locals love. It's mostly gentle, tree-lined and beginner-friendly, with lovely long cruises and easy access to the bigger circuit when you want it - including snow-sure Avoriaz up the valley.

Cross the village to Mont Chéry - it's usually quiet, sunny, and has some of the best-value mountain lunches around. And with Geneva just over an hour away, Les Gets is a brilliant long-weekend option.
