Courmayeur is the stylish, cosy Italian answer to Chamonix, sitting on the sunny southern side of Mont Blanc (Monte Bianco). The town is a gorgeous cobbled pedestrian centre full of boutiques, wine bars and some of the best mountain-restaurant food in the Alps. The ski area is compact and mostly intermediate, but the real draw is the whole package - long lunches, dolce vita evenings, world-class off-piste on the Vallée Blanche side, and easy access to Chamonix through the tunnel.

⛷The skiing

Courmayeur's ski area is compact but characterful - sunny, mostly intermediate runs spread across two sides of the mountain, reached by a cable car straight from town. It's more about beautiful cruising and long lunches than sheer size. For the adventurous, the Skyway Monte Bianco cable car climbs to Punta Helbronner (3,466m) for jaw-dropping views and access to serious off-piste, including the Italian start of the Vallée Blanche (guide essential). Chamonix is just through the Mont Blanc tunnel.

The Louk tip

Skiing finishes early here - by design. Do a long rifugio lunch (book Maison Vieille), ski down by mid-afternoon, and give yourself over to the aperitivo and shopping on Via Roma. Ride the Skyway on a clear day.

🚁Getting there

Courmayeur is the closest Italian resort to Geneva - around 1.5 hours through the Mont Blanc tunnel - with Turin about two hours and Milan around 2.5. That short transfer makes it a superb long-weekend option.
