Chamonix is a proper mountain town beneath Mont Blanc — the birthplace of alpinism, and about as dramatic and atmospheric as skiing gets. The ski areas are spread across the valley rather than one linked domain, and it shines for confident skiers and off-piste. But because it's a real, buzzing town (not purpose-built), it's also perfect for mixed groups and non-skiers — and it's the closest big resort to an airport.

⛷️The skiing
Chamonix's ski areas are separate rather than linked, each with its own character. Grands Montets is the big one for steep terrain and off-piste; Brévent-Flégère serves up jaw-dropping Mont Blanc views; Le Tour/Balme is gentler and great for intermediates; and Les Houches has lovely tree-lined runs, ideal in bad weather and for beginners. The headline act is the Vallée Blanche — a ~20km off-piste glacier descent from the Aiguille du Midi (go with a guide).
