Bansko is Bulgaria's leading resort and the byword for a cheap, cheerful ski trip that still delivers real mountains. A modern gondola climbs from a characterful old town of cobbled streets and traditional mehanas (taverns) up to compact but scenic skiing in the Pirin range. The pistes suit beginners and intermediates, the snowmaking is good, and the food, drinks and nightlife cost a fraction of the Alps - which makes it a favourite for value-hunting groups and first-timers.

⛷The skiing

Bansko's skiing starts a gondola-ride above the town, in the beautiful Pirin National Park. It's compact (~75km) but well-designed and scenic, with tree-lined lower runs, open slopes up top around Todorka, and good snowmaking to back up the natural cover. It's ideal for beginners and intermediates - wide, groomed cruising and excellent-value ski schools - with a couple of steeper pistes and some off-piste for stronger skiers. Queues at the gondola can build, so start early.

The Louk tip

The skiing is up the gondola, but stay in the atmospheric old town for the mehanas - grilled meats, hearty stews and rakia for a few pounds. Start early to beat the gondola queue, or ski down to town at the end for the shortest wait.

🚁Getting there

Bansko is served from Sofia (around 2.5 hours) and Plovdiv (around 2.5). There's no airport or fast train nearby, so most people take a pre-booked transfer or shared shuttle from Sofia - the drive up through the mountains is scenic.
